Luray Caverns Luray, VA | (540) 743-6551 Bills itself as East’s largest and most popular, with 10-story high ceilings, pools, and a “stalacpipe” organ. It really is worth a visit. Admission includes a visit to the Car and Carriage Museum. Entrance to the one-acre half-mile arborvitae maze is an additional charge. Open daily year round.
Skyline Caverns Front Royal, VA | (800) 296-4545 Located right at the Front Royal entrance to Skyline Drive, this show cave features three underground streams, a 37-foot waterfall, and rare formations called anthodites, the “orchids of the mineral kingdom”. Open daily, year round.
Motoring
Skyline Drive North Entrance: Front Royal, VA (540) 999-3500 This 105 mile long scenic highway follows the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains through the Shenandoah National Park. Built during the Great Depression, it features beautiful stonework in its 75 overlooks and the Mary’s Rock Tunnel. This is leisurely driving -- the 35 mph speed limit is about all you would want to do anyway -- and you don’t want to skip the overlooks. Open year round, weather permitting. If in doubt, call number above for current road conditions in park.
Fort Valley George Washington National Forest - North Entrance: Waterlick, VA This is the proverbial “hidden valley” with lovely farms cradled by mountains on either side, unspoiled by development. The highlight is a drive up from the valley to the Woodstock Tower, a 1935 observation tower offering views of the Shenandoah Valley and the seven bends of the Shenandoah River. Burwell-Morgan Mill Millwood, VA (540) 955-2600 Restored 1785 mill is the oldest operable merchant mill in the Shenandoah Valley. Open May through October, Thursday through Sunday. Operates (grinds) on Saturdays and most major holidays.
State Arboretum of Virginia Boyce, VA (540) 837-1758 700-Acre research facility and state arboretum displays over 8,000 trees and shrubs. Our favorite is the open meadow loop of the Virginia Native Plant Trail.
